This weekend whipped by and I can hardly believe that we're already into the middle of the week. We celebrated a 19th birthday in the house, topped off for the Geek by notification of a scholarship offer from a private University in our state. She has 4 weeks to make a decision, which is looking pretty simple right now as she hasn't heard from anywhere else yet.
This college business is a real stress inducer (and this is year 2! You'd think we'd be used to it by now.)
To add to it all, we seem to have hit monsoon season. The never-ending, incessant rainfall and resulting flooding is enough to make even the sanest person give up and go back to knitting winter woollies.
I haven't.
I've continued with my Swallowtail lace shawl and have been nupping like a pro............Well, almost.
Some of my nupps look a little untidy and a couple are in the wrong place, but hey, despite my fabulous lifeline, I am NOT ripping back!
Let's just call it a learning curve.
I stopped by my knit group last week and got a great tip on knitting nupps from my friend, Barb. I'd managed one row but had had terrible trouble getting my needle into 5 stitches all at once as I purled back on the next.
I knew there had to be an easier way!
The secret, it would seem, is to use a crochet hook. You complete your nupps with the crochet hook on the first row and then all you have to do on the other side, is purl the stitch just like all the others.
Easy! (Sort of......)
Here's a video that explains it all.
Thanks to this, I'm now nupping with the best of them.

Thanks so much for this video! Amazing!
ReplyDeleteKnow exactly what you mean about that college thing. Going through the same thing here. It's really tough.
Thanks for the video! I knew there had to be an easier way and this is it!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's so helpful. Thank you. I haven't knit those nupps yet but they're definitely on my list. I still have to find the right pattern.
ReplyDeleteYour shawl is going to be gorgeous.
Jane ~ I remember my 1st nupps and being disheartened that they didn't all look perfect....and then I blocked my lace and WOW! They all miraculously evened out and looked the same ~ yours will to!

I'm getting really excited to see this blocked. The rows are getting pretty long now though, so I still have a way to go until that great day! (Aiming for my birthday, so only a couple of weeks.)
ReplyDeleteI'm doing my first round of nupps too -- some look more nupp-ish than others :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a releif when thinks go well with daughters! You will love the shawl I got there in the end with mu nubbs too, wish I'd known about the crochet hook though.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great tip on the nupps. Thanks for posting this.
ReplyDelete@W&WinA - we're part way there. The merit scholarship covers about half the tuition. Still got to find the rest somehow.......And then ofcourse there's daughter No.2!!
ReplyDeleteoooh nupps! go you!
ReplyDeleteNupps scare me! I have enough problems with bobbles. Your shawl looks just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteFear not! Thanks to this video, it's much easier than you think.
